Normal Heart Rate And Exercise
Question:

Could you tell me where I can find a chart that tells what the average heart rate after walking the treadmill or after an aerobics class is?

Also, assuming you have a healthy heart, what are the rates for various ages? For example, I'm 53 and on an average my pulse is approximately 64 beats per minute, like that when I was 22 years old.

Doctor George's reply:

Normal heart rate for an adult is 60 to 100 beats per minute.

As for the heart rate during exercise, I think you got it mixed up. You don’t exercise and try to find out if the heart rate after exercise is healthy. You compute your target heart rate for your age and then maintain that during exercise. For your age, assuming you are healthy, and your goal is 70 percent of your maximal heart rate, subtract your age from 220, then calculate 70 percent of the remainder. Since you are 53 years old, your target heart rate zone would be 117 beats per minute (220 - 52 = 168; 70% of 168 = 117). Pace yourself to maintain this heart rate during the main portion of your workout, until you begin your cool-down.
